“Let your prayer mean everything to you. Have it on your lips the first thing in the morning. Pray it on your way to work or to the office. Meet all your associates, your friends, your clients with your lovely prayer in your heart. It will become like fragrant incense in your heart rising the whole day long to the God Who loves you; and He in turn will bless you all the day. When you meet your friends you are glad, you greet them, you exchange a few words. But God is your most intimate Friend. He is everywhere; every lovely sight and sound should remind you of Him for everything is His gift, and if you are free from mortal sin, He is in your heart, living the fullness of His eternal life there in your very bosom. Greet Him often, and each time it will have all the gladness of a new meeting with Him Who made you and Who longs for your love. Besides, your prayer will be a constant petition for that special grace you need, and it will always remind you of the new ideal you mean to realize. It will remind you that you really intend to trust in God, or that you intend to become patient, or that you intend to remain pure. And so the whole day long your prayer will be like a song of love in your heart to the God of love Who is enthroned there in all His glory. Adopt this practice and be faithful to it. On the other hand, do not overdo it; do not make it a strain. Be peaceful, for God is peaceful. Do not rush your little prayer; linger over it; let it bubble up from your heart like a spring; roll it over your tongue, and the charm of this delightful conversation with God will grow on you, and it will tug at your heart, and you will experience the help of God, and you will undoubtedly improve. Thus your prayer will become a part of your very life, and you will learn to love it and to depend upon it — so much so that you will begin to feel that you could not get along without it. [...]
Thus you will grow intimate with God; you will greet Him at every turn, on every street corner; you will behold Him in the face of friend and foe — for we must love even those who hate us because such is the will of God. And what is more, all that you do will be done better and more expressly for His greater glory, and thus throughout life you will be sowing the seeds of eternal merit which you will harvest in the fields of heaven. Try it!”
